Arcadia History

Originally a Native American settlement for the Tongva ("Gabrielino") tribe , Arcadia has a long history. Spanish colonization systematically decimated the native population. While Mexico still held California, a land grant was made to Hugo Reid, a Scotsman, who became the first individual land owner in the area. Several others owned the land over the following years and in 1875 the land was purchased by Elias Baldwin. Baldwin was attracted to the land and compared it to paradise.

Baldwin's developments for the area include features that are still present today including the arboretum and the racetrack. He ensured a stop for the local railroad at his ranch, and made efforts to keep the area from flodding from the San Gabriel River. He eventually had to sell portions of his land, but what he retained essentially remains the city's boundaries even today. The City of Arcadia was finally incorporated in 1903 and became a Charter City in 1951.

Under a local ordinance regarding the sale of property, Arcadia was developed by white Protestant owners. A Supreme Court ruling in 1965 opened the doors to others. Continued development saw the opening of the Santa Anita Fashion park in 1975. The City continues to develop and grow from the initial 500 residents to the 55,000 people who today call Arcadia their home.
